Walk a Mile in Her Shoes (Squamish and Whistler)
Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® ( www.walkamileinhershoes.org ): The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is a fun opportunity for men to educate the community about a very serious subject and to rally the community to take action to prevent sexualized violence. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun and it gets the community to talk about something that's really difficult to talk about: gender relations and sexual violence. The Howe Sound Women’s Centre hosted this event for the first time in September of 2009; this was a first for the Howe Sound Women’s Centre as well as a first in the Sea to Sky Corridor. The support was wonderful with over 25 men marching and many more women and children marching alongside them through the streets of downtown Squamish. The Howe Sound Women’s Centre is proud to announce that we will be hosting our second annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Fundraising march to raise awareness in the hopes of eliminating sexual violence towards women and children on August 14/ 2010 in Squamish, and August 21/ 2010 in Whistler. As a fundraiser, all monies raised will go towards the Howe Sound Women’s Centre’s programs. Despite the seriousness of the topic, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a fun family event! Men are encouraged to gather pledges and bring awareness about the event as they prepare for the big day in which they will march approximately one mile in women’s high heel shoes! Friends and family are encouraged to march as well in support of the well heeled participants! For more information please call the Howe Sound Women's Centre: 604-892-5748 or email: info@hswc.ca
