What is Pearl's Place?

Pearl's Place is a transition house. It provides temporary housing in a safe and secure environment, offering necessities to women and their children leaving an abusive relationship. There is no charge for the service, and time spent in the transition house is usually less than a month. Staff can provide support in getting financial, medial or legal help and counseling services. We offer a 24-hour confidential telephone service for information, individual support and referral.

Facts:

Assault is not a sickness. It is a crime. The women does not cause the abuse. In BC leaving an abusive partner is not considered desertion. Legal rights to financial support and custody of the children are retained. If you are an immigrant who is sponsored by your husband, it is important that you consult a lawyer in order not to lose your right to remain in Canada, should you decide to separate from your husband.

Ways You Can Help Yourself:

Let yourself feel your emotions fully. Do no judge yourself for having them.

Take time out for yourself. Make new women friends who are in the same situation, and go out with them. Follow your instincts about who you want to be friends with. Try not to let your pain, fear or embarrassment stop you from reaching out. Friends will help you move through the pain.

Find out about and use community resources for support. Use the transition house staff and volunteers for ongoing support; join a support group; utilize single parent support services, free community counseling services, recreation centres and educational resources. If you don't know what these services are, ask staff at the transition house or a worker at the Women's Centre.
